Had a chance to briefly speak with freshman Martin Breunig before a recent workout and we talked about his transition to Division I colllege basketball.
Breunig (pronounced Broy-nig) is a Leverkusen, Germany native who played at St. John's Northwest Military Academy in Delafield, WI. last season. He originally came to the United States in August 2010.
The 6-foot-8 forward signed with Maryland, but withdrew from the commitment after Terrapins coach Gary Williams retired.
Breunig quickly settled on Washington and hopes to make an immediate impact. He returned home for a quick visit after signing with the Huskies and returned last month. When he arrived to Montlake he weighed 200 pounds and now tips the scales at 210.
We talked about a variety of topics, including his relationship with Husky great Detlef Schrempf, the last UW player from Leverkusen, Germany. Here's a transcript of most of the interview with Breunig.
(How long have you been at Washington?) "Three weeks."
(What are your impressions of the Huskies?) "I'm impressed."
(Why?) "Because of how the players are. They are really friendly to me. They picked me up right away and kind of treat me as a family member. The workouts are really hard and I feel that makes me better in the games."
(Who have you became friends with?) "Terrence (Ross). I live with Terrence in an apartment. Aziz (N'Diaye) lives in this apartment too. Scott (Suggs) is a friend. Darnell (Gant) is a really good guy. We went out sometimes. There's others too and we go out."
(Why did you pick Washington?)
