#7 Kansas St: 2010-11 Basketball Preview

Overall Rank: #7

Conference Rank: #1 Big 12 Conference

2009-10: 29-8, 11-5

2009-10 postseason: NCAA

Coach: Frank Martin (72-32 at Kansas State, 72-32 overall)

Coach Frank Martin has turned Kansas State into a consistent contender in the Big 12. This year the Wildcats are hoping to take the next step and win the conference crown. Rival Kansas will have something to say about that, but there is no doubt that KSU is here to stay and will look to build on their Elite Eight appearance of a year ago.

Key Losses: G Denis Clemente, C Luis Colon, F Dominique Sutton

Key Newcomers:

The Wildcats have plenty of talent returning, but there is certainly room for the newcomers. Freddy Asprilla had a tremendous freshman campaign at Florida International where he averaged 13.7 points and 9.2 rebounds. After spending a little time at a couple junior colleges, the 6-10 forward will add some depth to the frontcourt. Small forward Nino Williams was expected to go to prep school this year, but the transfer of Dominique Sutton gives KSU a need at small forward. Shane Southwell will also add some depth at that position. Juevol Myles will battle for playing time at the point guard position after spending one year at the junior college level. Myles could end up starting if he can keep the team under control. Fellow point guard Will Spradling rounds out this relatively impressive class.

Backcourt:

Jacob Pullen is the obvious star of this team. After averaging 19.3 points and 3.4 assists last year, Pullen will win a ton of preseason and postseason accolades. Pullen is a superb outside shooter and knocked down three three-pointers per contest and shot nearly 42 percent overall. The question is whether or not Pullen should be running the point. Last year Clemente helped him out in that department. Can Pullen be as effective if he has to have the ball in his hands most of the time? If Pullen has to run the show, the Wildcats will need Rodney McGruder to step up his game. The 6-4 sophomore is a quality outside shooter, but he needs to continue being productive while seeing more playing time. Martavious Irving was a highly touted recruit, but failed to make much of a splash last year. With more of an opportunity to play, Irving could be in for a huge year. Nick Russell is yet another sophomore who did not play much last season. However, Russell is a candidate to play some minutes at the point and allow Pullen to play off the ball.

Frontcourt:

Curtis Kelly is to the frontcourt what Pullen is to the backcourt. Kelly, a former Huskie of Connecticut, averaged 11.5 points and a team high 6.2 rebounds and 2.0 blocks per contest during the 2009-2010 campaign. Kelly got into form during the second half of the season and is poised to put up even better numbers than he did last year. Jamar Samuels is one of the options to take over for Sutton at the small forward position. The 6-7 junior was a superb sixth man last year and is a fine do-it-all player. The issue in the frontcourt may be the depth. Jordan Henriquez-Roberts is the biggest player on the roster at 7-0 and 245 pounds and could see a bigger role this season. Victor Ojeleye is not big enough to play the five spot, but he could see some quality minutes at the three or four spots.

Who to Watch:

Wally Judge was a great recruiting pickup last year, but he started off very slow and only averaged 3.3 points and 3.0 rebounds during his freshman campaign. However, Judge was playing his best ball late in the season and he should be ready to step into a starting role and become the major interior force that everybody expected him to be. If that is the case, Kansas State?s frontcourt will be just fine without Sutton and center Luis Colon.

Final Projection:

Kansas State has just as much talent as they did last year and that is scary. Pullen and Kelly are a great inside/outside duo, but there are some very talented sophomores on this team who are ready to blossom and become major contributors. With this much talent on the squad, the Wildcats are poised to make another deep NCAA Tournament run.

Projected Post-season Tournament: NCAA

Projected Starting Five:

Jacob Pullen, Senior, Guard, 19.3 ppg

Rodney McGruder, Sophomore, Guard, 3.9 ppg

Jamar Samuels, Junior, Forward, 11.0 ppg

Curtis Kelly, Senior, Forward, 11.5 ppg

Wally Judge, Sophomore, Forward, 3.3 ppg

#10 Syracuse: 2010-11 Basketball Preview

Overall Rank: #10

Conference Rank: #3 Big East Conference

2009-10: 30-5, 15-3

2009-10 postseason: NCAA

Coach: Jim Boeheim (829-293 at Syracuse, 829-293 overall)

Coach Jim Boeheim did it again at Syracuse. There were a lot of questions heading into last season, but the Orange emerged as a superb team that finished with an extremely impressive 30-5 overall record. This time around nobody is undervaluing what Coach Boeheim can do. This season, despite the loss of three starters, there are fewer questions and once again the Orange should be ready for a nice NCAA run.

Key Losses: F Wesley Johnson, C Arizne Onuaku, G Andy Rautins

Key Newcomers:

The newcomers could be the key to the success of this team. While there are plenty of returning players to pick up the slack, especially since Syracuse would prefer to go just seven or eight deep, Dion Waiters, C.J. Fair and Fabrico De Melo will all battle for major minutes. Waiters is not much of a shooter for a shooting guard, but he does a great job attacking the basket. Fair is yet another lanky forward who could immediately be a major presence on the defensive end. De Melo is garnering all of the headlines and for good reason. The 7-0 center is probably a one and done player and he should step right into a starting role. Baye Moussa Kieta rounds out the impressive class, but he will likely redshirt.

Backcourt:

Scoop Jardine and Brandon Triche split the point guard duties last season. One of them will always be running the show this year too, but both could also be in the starting lineup. Jardine put up better overall numbers during his sophomore campaign and would likely be the primary ball handler if both were to start. However, it was Triche who started all 35 games last season while Jardine came in off of the bench. If both are starting, they need to improve their outside shooting?or at least take more shots. Last season they left a majority of the shooting to the now departed Andy Rautins. Now they both need to take more shots. Waiters would be the other starting option if Coach Boeheim wanted to have Jardine come in off the bench once again. Mookie Jones, a 6-6 sophomore, showed glimpses of his shooting ability last season, but he needs to start using his size to attack the basket if he wants to find a spot in the regular rotation.

Frontcourt:

Kris Joseph is another forward who can stretch out the defense. His range does not quite go out beyond the arc, but he shoot or attack the basket. After averaging 10.8 points and 5.5 rebounds last season, Joseph is ready to step into a starting role and continue to put up solid numbers. The departure of Rautins does put some pressure on Joseph to improve his outside shooting and it would be extremely beneficial if Joseph can connect on more than 22.0 percent of his attempts from beyond the arc. If Joseph cannot do it, Jardine and Triche better. Otherwise, the best long range shooting threat on the team would be Jones and it remains to be seen if he can even work his way into Coach Boeheim?s tight rotation. DaShonte Riley is a seven-footer who played sparingly during his freshman campaign. He will not be asked to do much, but he is a fine rebounder and shot blocker. However, a foot injury will likely keep Riley out for the season.

Who to Watch:

Rick Jackson is the new star of the frontcourt. After averaging 9.7 points, 7.0 rebounds and 2.0 blocks per game last season, Jackson is ready for a huge year. Without having Wesley Johnson and Arizine Onuaku with him in the frontcourt, Jackson needs to prove that he can consistently be the Orange?s go-to-guy under the basket. At times last season he would disappear, but it did not really matter since Johnson and Onuaku would pick up the slack. Syracuse cannot afford Jackson to take a night off this season even with De Melo on the floor.

Final Projection:

This is a young team, but a team with a whole lot of talent. Syracuse will get the most out of that talent and Coach Boeheim will find a nice seven or eight man rotation by the time conference play starts. That means the Orange will once again be a contender in the Big East and a dangerous team in March.

Projected Post-season Tournament: NCAA

Projected Starting Five:

Scoop Jardine, Junior, Guard, 9.1 ppg

Brandon Triche, Sophomore, Guard, 8.1 ppg

Kris Joseph, Junior, Forward, 10.8 ppg

Rick Jackson, Senior, Forward, 9.7 ppg

Fabrico De Melo, Freshman, Forward, DNP last season

Scott Suggs out, Venoy Overton still injured

Lorenzo Romar and Isaiah Thomas just met with the media. Thought I'd post some quick notes before interviewing other players.

Junior backup guard Scott Suggs strained his medial lateral ligament in his knee and will not play tomorrow against Long Beach State.

Backup guard Venoy Overton is still not 100 percent after injuring his tailbone two weeks ago.

Romar said there's a chance he may tweak the lineup.

Romar was pleased with UW was still in the games against Kentucky and Michigan State even though the Huskies didn't play their best. He said the rebounding remains a concern that could be rectified by more practice or changes in personnel.

Romar isn't overly concerned with the free throw problems. He said Aziz N'Diaye is improving and he expects Thomas to make more FTs than he did in Hawaii.

Romar heaped a generous amount of praise on N'Diaye, calling him a "difference maker." He also said Justin Holiday played well last week.

Romar talked about Long Beach State coach Dan Monson, who coached at Gonzaga and was offered the UW job before former AD Barbara Hedges hired Romar.

"That's the job I wanted all along," Romar said.

Romar said it's not essential to have a late-game closer. He said it would be nice to have 2-3 players comfortable in that situation and envisioned redshirt freshman C.J. Wilcox and freshman Terrence Ross maturing into that role towards the end of the season. Thomas is also a candidate.

Thomas has lobbied Romar to be UW's closer.

Thomas acknowledged his off free throw shooting and said "it will get better."

More later.

A Brief Guide To Basketball Hoops

In basketball the points are scored when a player throws a ball into a hoop suspended 10ft above the ground. In the NBA and NWBA the official size of the basketball hoop is 18in (46cm) in diameter. The net that extends from the hoop ranges from 15-18in (38-46cm) in length and is usually made from nylon. The hoop is made from metal, usually steel and in competitive games is connected to a backboard.

Ohio State makes early statement in victory over Florida

Florida and Ohio State entered the O'Connell Center Tuesday evening with top 10 rankings, star-studded rosters and Final Four expectations.

Only one team walked off the court a legitimate national title contender.

In their second meeting since the 2007 national championship game won by Florida, it was Ohio State that earned a convincing victory. The Buckeyes withstood the best the Gators had to offer in a back-and-forth first half and then elevated their game to a far higher level in the second, transforming a three-point halftime deficit into a 93-75 rout.

If Duke still remains a prohibitive early national title favorite, Ohio State solidified its place on the short list of teams capable of challenging the Blue Devils. The Buckeyes shot 63 percent from the floor and 43 percent from three-point range, receiving significant contributions from all four of their marquee players.

Highly touted freshman big man Jared Sullinger looked spectacular, scoring 26 points on 13 of 17 shooting and grabbing 10 rebounds for his second double-double in as many games. Wing David Lighty also scored 26 on 9 of 11 shooting, torching each of the defenders Florida rotated on him from the perimeter. And William Buford and Jon Diebler were also effective in scoring 16 and 14, respectively.

Maybe the best sign of the early season so far for Ohio State has been the performance of freshman Aaron Craft, the lone true point guard in Thad Matta's notoriously short rotation. Craft came off the bench to put up nine assists and zero turnovers in Ohio State's opener over the weekend and he had a solid seven-point, five-assist, 29-minute outing against Florida.

In national player of the year Evan Turner's breakout season last year, he carried Ohio State into Big Ten title contention and to within an eyelash of the Elite Eight.

With Turner's supporting cast taking on starring roles and Sullinger living up to his hype so far, it's possible the Buckeyes may be better without him.

--- USC improved to 4-2 with an 81-54 victory over Cal State Fullerton.

--- Oregon State beat Charlotte 83-70 for its second win of the season.

--- Stanford fell from the ranks of the unbeaten after an 55-52 loss to Murray State in the first round of the 76 Classic in Anaheim, Calif.

College Hoops Tuesday: Your Commentary

We've already had a matchup between Top 10 teams this season (Ohio State at Florida), but Tuesday brings about the first matchup between Top 5 teams as Duke and Kansas State meet in the finals of the CBE Classic. The Wildcats, playing in front of a partisan crowd in Kansas City, scored 49 points in the first half and knocked down 12 three pointers in beating Gonzaga 81-64 in the nightcap of Monday's doubleheader. The Blue Devils survived a game Marquette squad 82-77 thanks in large part to sophomore forward Mason Plumlee, who accounted for 25 points, 12 rebounds, five blocks and three assists and turned the tide of the game in the second half. Mason offers Duke an interior presence that the defending national champions did not have last season as he started off the season with a broken wrist and seniors Lance Thomas and Brian Zoubek along with older brother Miles weren't considered to be major scoring threats in the post.

Also of note in the frontcourt is the return of senior forward Curtis Kelly to the Kansas State rotation. The Bronx native, suspended from the Wildcats' first three games of the season, was rusty in his first game action of the year (three points, four rebounds and three turnovers). But head coach Frank Martin enjoys the luxury of a deep roster just like his team's opponent on Tuesday night, meaning that while K-State will need Kelly to get going there are other options available. Wally Judge and Freddy Asprilla got the start Monday night while sixth man Jamar Samuels played more minutes than both of them (and this is usually the case). The Kansas State frontcourt will need to be ready to contribute more offensively against the Blue Devils, who limited Marquette to four three pointers on twenty attempts and opponents thus far get just 25% of their points from beyond the arc (Kansas State got 44% of their points on Monday from deep).

Even with the crowd likely in their favor, Kansas State will need to take far better care of the basketball than they did against Gonzaga as they turned the ball over 22 times. Defensively the Blue Devils, thanks to perimeter players such as Kyrie Irving and Nolan Smith (just to name two), have forced opponents into turning the ball over 27.2% of the time through four games. Jacob Pullen, who leads Kansas State in scoring (16.0) and assists (4.0), will need to play at an All-American level while contributors such as Martavious Irving, Rodney McGruder and Will Spradling continue their progression on the perimeter. Kansas State has good wins over Virginia Tech and Gonzaga but a win over the defending national champions would do wonders for their national reputation. A win for Duke further cements their status as the favorites to win the national title.

The Maui Invitational moves to the semifinal round, as Connecticut takes on Michigan State and Kentucky meets Washington in a battle that may be spicier for the fans than the teams themselves. For all the talk about "hard feelings" in regards to the recruitment of Terrence Jones (keep in mind UK and Washington were both in the chase for Enes Kanter as well) the simple fact is that Kentucky got the kid and Washington didn't. Jones was outstanding after a lackadaisical start against Oklahoma but John Calipari's young squad will be tested by a more experience group that absolutely blitzed Virginia (tied a school record with 17 three pointers). Michigan State struggled with host Chaminade before waking up in the second half, and their task against UConn will likely be a simple one: stop Kemba Walker.

The junior scored 29 of his 31 points in the second half of the Huskies' win over Wichita State, and more of the same may be needed to take out the deep Spartans. And if you're looking for some non-tournament action to keep an eye on defending national runner-up Butler hits the road to take on Siena in a matchup of two of the more successful non-BCS programs the last four years, and there's the Battle of I-10 between New Mexico State and UTEP. Troy Gillenwater (NMSU) and Randy Culpepper (UTEP) are both Player of the Year possibilities in their respective leagues, and the outcome could be decided by which "supporting cast" performs better. As Thanksgiving approaches so do more intriguing non-conference matchups which make for good early-season evaluations of many of the nation's best teams.

Breaking Down the Syracuse 2-3 Zone

Photo Credit: CNYCentral / Syracuse.com Jim Boeheim is widely renowned as the best zone coach in college basketball. He is one of the only coaches that utilizes a zone as his primary defense, rather than a change up, and he has been extremely successful. Michigan head coach John Beilein has not been immune to Boeheim?s [...]

Breakfast buffet: Here we go again for the Pac-10

Pull up a chair and sit down at the breakfast buffet, an assortment of all the freshest newsworthy college hoops stories on the net. To make a submission, contact me via email or Twitter.

• The beleaguered Pac-10 had avoided any disastrous losses until Wednesday night when Oregon State lost to previously winless Seattle 83-80 and USC got trounced at home by Rider 77-57. Which loss is worse? Even though Seattle had lost to Cal Poly and San Francisco by a combined 37 points, my vote goes to the Trojans, who needed a late 10-0 run just to get that close.

• Had Kemba Walker not had one of the best games of his college career on Wednesday night, UConn might have lost to Vermont. The Huskies point guard scored 42 points on 15-for-24 shooting, showcasing an improved jump shot and enabling UConn to break open a tight game for a 89-73 victory.

• A win over BYU helped Utah State earn an at-large bid to the NCAA tournament last season, but the Cougars avenged that loss with a 78-72 victory over the Aggies in Provo on Wednesday night. Keeping it that close suggests Utah State is again the class of the WAC, especially considering the Aggies led into the final five minutes despite 15 of 26 free throw shooting.

• The Preseason NIT semifinals are set with Tennessee's 60-56 victory over Missouri State and Villanova's 82-66 throttling of Boston University. The Vols will face dangerous Virginia Commonwealth in one semifinal, while the Wildcats will meet UCLA in a rematch of second-round NCAA tournament game from 2009 won easily by Villanova.

• Great stuff here from Fanhouse's Greg Couch, who ridicules the NCAA for fighting to prevent gambling on college sports yet doing nothing when a major power player in college athletics bets more than $170,000 on the 2007 NCAA tournament. Hypocrisy at its finest, folks.

• Turquoise jerseys with orange lettering, Oregon State? Well, at least they're for a good cause. The Beavers will debut their new gear Sunday against Texas Southern in a Nike-sponsored matchup devoted to helping Native American communities get better access to sport.

• One of the few downsides to Memphis' 2-0 start had been that prized freshman Will Barton scored a combined five points and often appeared lost on the court after missing 17 days of preseason practice due to injuries. Barton regained his shooting stroke on Wednesday night, scoring 22 points and grabbing eight rebounds off the bench in a 94-79 victory over Northwestern State.

• The mediocrity of Murray State's league demands that the Racers perform almost flawlessly out of conference to have any hope of an at-large NCAA tournament bid, so Wednesday's 77-61 loss at Mississippi may prove especially damaging. The Racers shot 30 percent from the field and got outscored in the paint, 34-17.

• If Loyola Marymount is going to live up to the preseason hype it received, the Lions can't keep losing winnable games. They scored only three points in the final 7:19 against Bradley on Wednesday night, enabling the Braves to rally from an eight-point deficit and eke out a 59-57 home win.

Substantial Improvement For NY Knicks

Don't look just yet, but the Knicks may be silently marching back to a state of relevancy in New York. The city would love more than anything to see its favorite basketball team matter once again.
