NCAA slaps Chillious with citation for improper comments

The NCAA cited Washington assistant Raphael Chillious (left) for a secondary violation stemming from comments he made about recruits that appeared in a May 16, 2011 Sports Illustrated story.

The Huskies reported the violation to the Pac-12 office Wednesday. Neither the school or conference would comment.

The violation occurred when Chillious made improper comments about 2013 four-star recruit Jordan Tebbutt and 2014 five-star recruit Justin Jackson.

In the SI story, Chillious talks about watching Jackson, a Houston ninth-grader last season, at a Thanksgiving tournament.

"This is a Polaroid that you shake off, stick on the refrigerator and date," he said in the SI story. "Because later on, when Justin's a senior, I can talk about it. 'Man, how long ago was it, I saw you play that game in Nederland? Remember? You were in ninth grade. Man, you got so much stronger since then.' And other coaches won't have that memory with him."

According to NCAA rules, coaches can not evaluate or rate recruits for the media until the player has signed a letter of intent.

A source familiar with the investigation described the case as "very unusual" and said Chillious is not expected to receive disciplinary punishment from the school or conference.

The citation is the most serious violation to hit the UW staff since former assistant Cameron Dollar, the Seattle University coach, committed several recruiting infractions and was suspended for a month in 2002.
