Glenn Hummel told the Indianapolis Star on Monday that his son intends to apply for a medical redshirt and return to Purdue as a fifth-year senior in the 2011-12 school year. The versatile forward tentatively plans to have surgery the week of Thanksgiving to avoid missing too much class.
It's difficult to gauge whether Hummel will return at the same all-conference level as Purdue fans remember him because it's pretty uncommon for male basketball players to suffer two ACL tears in less than a year. One of the few current examples is Stanford forward Andy Brown, whose basketball career may be over after he sustained a third torn ACL in two years during workouts this summer.
Regardless of whether Hummel is able to return at full strength or not, this latest injury is still a bitter one for Purdue's leading scorer. He'd worked hard to return from an ACL tear that torpedoed Purdue's Final Four hopes last season, yet now he'll have to watch fellow seniors JaJuan Johnson and E'Twaun Moore finish their Purdue careers without him being able to help them on the floor.
"It's a shame, because he was on target . . . moving better and shooting well," Glenn Hummel told the Star. "Don't write him off just yet. The tough thing is that he won't finish his Purdue career with JaJuan and E'Twaun."
The trio of Hummel, Johnson and Moore were supposed to lead Purdue to a Final Four berth this season, but the Boilermakers were likely going to face some rebuilding years after their departure. It's a high price to pay, but maybe Hummel's return will soften that transition.
