The two dominant basketball programs in the Washington D.C. area have met a mere three times in the past 31 seasons. Two of those meetings only happened because the programs were placed in the same bracket at a preseason tournament or the NCAA tournament, while the lone scheduled game resulted in an epic 84-83 Maryland upset in the 1993-94 season opener.
There's no guarantee Maryland and Georgetown will share the same court anytime soon, but for the first time in years there appears to be some momentum in that direction. New Maryland athletic director Kevin Anderson told the Washington Times he is pursuing at least a two-game series between the Terrapins and Hoyas as part of a larger push to provide Maryland fans with more appealing non-conference games.
"Lee Reed, the athletic director at Georgetown, is a very good friend of mine," Anderson told the Times. "We've talked about renewing that series and doing a home-and-home series. We're in a serious conversation now."
To say that such a series is long overdue would be a massive understatement. Even though George Mason has crept into the conversation recently, Maryland and Georgetown are still clearly the region's two top dogs, fighting over everything from fans, to recruits, to space on the front of the Washington Post sports page.
The Terps and Hoyas have played 62 times historically, yet a good reason has never been given for why the series disappeared. Play a home-and-home series, play it on a neutral court, play it on an aircraft carrier, but it's time for the Maryland-Georgetown rivalry to be revived.
