Is Terrence Ross the next big thing at Washington?

The last time we saw Terrence Ross (above, middle), he came off the bench and dropped 19 points on North Carolina in a NCAA tournament round of 32 game.

In the previous outing, he was scoreless on 0-for-5 shooting in 10 minutes of his first NCAA tournament game.

And the week prior, Ross lit up the Pac-10 Tournament. He made his first career start in the three games and averaged 15.3 points, 2.7 rebounds while shooting 52.8% from the field. The freshman was also selected to the five-man All-Pac-10 Tournament team.

Ross certainly finished an inconsistent season on a high note and many believe the 6-foot-6 swingman is poised for a big breakout year next season.

The Arizona Republic believes Ross can be one of the surprise players in the Pac-12 while NBAdraft.net projects him as a 2012 first-round pick.

Still the surest proof Ross might have a short stay at Washington came from Isaiah Thomas, the UW junior who opted for the draft and is forgoing his final year of collegiate eligibility.

Thomas has long claimed Ross has next-level ability and he did so again the other day.

Jus got done hoopin @ #UW wit my teammates... Ima tell yall now ur only gonna have Terrance Ross ONE more yr that boy is official!! DG I C Uless than a minute ago via Echofon Favorite Retweet Reply

Washington lost its top three scorers creating an offensive void that could push Ross into the role of a scorer.

He averaged 8.0 points and shot 44.3 percent from the field last season. He also converted 44 three-pointers, sank 25 of 33 free throws and exceptional at finishing at the rim.

While junior Scott Suggs led UW with a 45.0 three-point field goal percentage and redshirt freshman C.J. Wilcox sank a team high 63 treys, Ross is the only returner who has proven he can create his own shot off the dribble.

The ability to take over games, which he did at home against Oregon when he tallied a career-high 25 points and at USC when he pumped in 18, should earn him plenty of minutes on the court. Like many freshmen, he began his UW career as a defensive liability, but steadily improved throughout the season.

There's a genuine buzz growing this offseason about No. 31. And maybe Thomas is correct when he says the upcoming season may be the last for Ross.
