John Jenkins didn’t start Team USA’s 88-61 exhibition win Thursday. Didn’t seem to affect his shot.
The Vanderbilt star came off the bench and hit eight 3-pointers against Chinese pro team New Century, helping the U.S. overcome a slow start in its preparation for the World University Games.
“Once we got into a grove and found our chemistry offensively, it got better,” guard Ashton Gibbs said. “We started playing well. We played better on the defensive end and let that lead to offense. John (Jenkins) hit some shots to get us going, and we kept it going from there.”
Jenkins was the only U.S. player in double figures, though big men Greg Mangano (Yale) and Trevor Mbakwe (Minnesota), along with guard Orlando Johnson (Santa Barbara) all finished with nine. Mangano and Mbakwe each had a team-high eight boards. Scoop Jardine (Syracuse) dished seven assists.
Marcus Denmon (Missouri), Jardine, Draymond Green (Michigan State), Tim Abromaitis (Notre Dame) and JaMychal Green (Alabama) were the starters, though everyone except Abromaitis played 17 minutes.
Team USA opens play Saturday against Mexico.
