MILWAUKEE - Wisconsin-Milwaukee point guard Kaylon Williams was arrested early Wednesday morning in his hometown of Cedar Rapids on suspicion of drunken driving after he fled a traffic stop and was later taken down by a K-9 unit, authorities said.
Sgt. Cristy Hamblin of the Cedar Rapids Police Department told The Associated Press that Williams drew the attention of officers after he was spotted driving without a front license plate, which is illegal in Iowa.
According to authorities, Williams pulled over, then drove off when the officer approached. He then missed a turn and went off the road, authorities said.
"Once he got up into the grass, the driver, which was later identified as Williams, got out of the vehicle and took off running on foot," Hamblin said.
An officer followed Williams, but couldn't catch up to him. A K-9 unit in the area found a suspect matching Williams' description two blocks away and picked up the pursuit.
"The dog tackled him, didn't bite him or anything, but at that time he was arrested," Hamblin said.
A criminal complaint said Williams, 22, had a blood-alcohol content of 0.228, nearly three times the legal limit in Iowa. The Linn County Sheriff's Office didn't have an attorney listed for Williams.
Hamblin said Williams was charged with operating while intoxicated, driving without a license plate, driving without insurance and interference.
The Cedar Rapids Gazette first reported details of Williams' arrest.
Williams was a former prep star at Kennedy High in Cedar Rapids before playing at Kirkwood Community College. He averaged 8.3 points and 5.4 assists for Milwaukee as a junior last season and was considered a key piece in the Panthers' run to the Horizon League regular season title.
"We are aware of the situation involving Kaylon Williams," coach Rob Jeter said in a statement. "We are disappointed and will take appropriate action as we gather more information and the legal process runs its course."
Milwaukee lost to Butler in the Horizon League tournament finals and Northwestern in the first round of the NIT.
