Dunk of the Year nominee: Old Dominion guard Kent Bazemore

Stingy defense and rebounding have been the foundation of Old Dominion's success under head coach Blaine Taylor, but occasionally the Monarchs like to surprise us with some flair to go with their fundamentals.

Check out Old Dominion guard Kent Bazemore unleashing a vicious transition dunk at the 1:11 mark of the video below. In the first half of the Monarchs' 77-70 victory over Atlantic 10 contender Richmond on Wednesday night, Bazemore catches a pass on a dead sprint on the left wing and rises up and over a helpless defender for a memorable one-handed slam.

Bazemore's slam was the highlight of a season-high 22-point performance that may have been his best in an Old Dominion uniform. The 6-foot-5 wing hit 6 of 12 shots and also contributed six rebounds and five steals, sending the Monarchs (5-1) to their fifth straight victory after a narrow season-opening loss to Georgetown.

Old Dominion entered the season as favorites in the Colonial Athletic Association, and the Monarchs have looked the part the past three games with victories over Clemson, Xavier and now the Spiders. If Bazemore and senior Ben Finney can continue to provide consistent perimeter scoring to complement Frank Hassell down low, the Monarchs should have a chance to win an NCAA tournament game for a second consecutive year.
