A decade after Oregon made a big splash with a billboard in Times Square promoting quarterback Joey Harrington's Heisman campaign, another Pacific Northwest school is trying something similar on a smaller scale.
Portland has erected a billboard in the City of Roses in support of senior guard Jared Stohl, one of the nation's most feared 3-point specialists. The billboard spans two sides of a five-story parking garage and reads "Guess who led the nation in 3's last year?"
Stohl sank 98 of 205 3-pointers last season, a blistering 47.8 percent. He had been shooting 52.5 percent from behind the arc this season before missing 6 of 8 3-pointers in a 94-72 shellacking against Washington on Monday night.
Of course, the great irony of the billboard campaign is that Stohl spent the offseason working to put himself in position to build a reputation as something besides just a 3-point shooter. He intends to get better on defense, and creating and finishing off the dribble in hopes of establishing himself as a more complete player.
Stohl has made 33 threes in 10 games so far this season, but amazingly that's not the most in college basketball. That title belongs to Long Beach State guard Greg Plater, who has sank 34 threes in nine games.
Maybe Long Beach State officials need to get to work on a billboard of their own.
