• St. John's blew halftime leads in seven of its 16 losses a year ago, so the senior-heavy Red Storm had to be pleased to flip the script on Arizona State. Trailing by 10 points after an abysmal first half in the title game of the Great Alaska Shootout on Saturday night, St. John's roared back for a 67-58 victory behind 20 points from tournament MVP Justin Brownlee.
• Dayton entered Saturday's date with Cincinnati undefeated including an impressive road win over Mississippi, so it's difficult to explain why the Flyers looked so totally overmatched in a 68-34 loss. The Flyers shot 20 percent from the field and trailed 56-19 early in the second half, inexplicable considering Cincinnati is likely to finish in the lower half of the Big East this season.
• A matchup with Atlantic 10 contender Richmond on Saturday night represented Purdue's first major test of the season, and needlessly to say, the Boilermakers didn't earn a passing grade. They lost 65-54 and couldn't generate much offensive flow for most of the game against Richmond's stingy matchup zone, a performance eerily reminiscent of their struggles without Robbie Hummel late in last year's regular season.
• The absence of point guard Ronald Nored doesn't excuse Butler's 71-68 home loss to an Evansville team expected to finish in the lower half of the Missouri Valley Conference. The cold-shooting Bulldogs have one more chance to right the ship against Loyola this week before a difficult two-game stretch against Duke and Xavier.
• Credit Oregon coach Dana Altman with the line of the day after Kyle Singler scored 30 points to lead Duke to a 98-71 thrashing of the Ducks and younger brother E.J. in a battle of brothers in Portland. Said Altman of the "other Singler," "We're trying to get him to transfer."
• Why does Washington's Lorenzo Romar have a reputation as one of college basketball's good guys? Because of stories like the one Terrence Jones told the Lexington Herald-Leader about his chat with Romar after selecting Kentucky over the Huskies. "He didn't try to get off the phone quick like I thought he would," Jones said. "He just talked to me and told me what I had to do in college. He really left it off as I could depend on him and trust him even if I wasn't attending his school."
• The craziest stat from Xavier's triple-overtime win over Wofford on Saturday night was that the Musketeers' bench accounted for only three of its team's 94 points. Xavier's starters averaged 46 minutes apiece, an impressive show of resilience yet another sign that despite a 5-1 record this is not one of the Musketeers' stronger teams.
• If the margin of victory wasn't what Syracuse coach Jim Boeheim was hoping for, at least he can take solace that the Orange showed some offensive spark in an 80-76 victory over Georgia Tech. Kris Joseph led five players in double figures with 19 points as undefeated Syracuse eclipsed 70 points for just the second time in six games.
• Nebraska's 60-58 victory over USC is noteworthy only because the Trojans led 37-17 at one point late in the first half. A 9-2 run to end the half got the Huskers back in it and reversed momentum, paving the way for Nebraska's largest comeback since an overtime win over Kansas State way back in 1997.
