Oklahoma State forward apologizes for insenstive tweet

Here's a helpful hint for college basketball players looking to avoid a twitter-induced spate of bad publicity: You probably should avoid making any jokes referring to recent on-campus shootings.

Oklahoma State forward Matt Pilgrim learned that the hard way this week because of comments he made Monday night hours after fellow student Kasey Cook was shot in the upper leg during a robbery attempt in Stillwater.

"So there (is) a shooter on OSU campus aka Stillwater," Pilgrim tweeted. "Hate to (say) it, but I can see why LOL."

Pilgrim has since removed the tweet, apologized to those he offended and admitted his comment was "not well thought through," but he apparently felt the need to explain himself further rather than just stop there. The Tulsa World has the rest of his follow-up tweets, the first two of which certainly won't find their way onto tourism brochures in Stillwater or pamphlets Oklahoma State coach Travis Ford sends to potential recruits.

"I was referring to how Stillwater is so boring for some people that it can turn you crazy," Pilgrim tweeted. "Being from the big city (Cincinnati), I've dealt with things I've never had to deal with until I came here."

"Everyone who came into contact with me knows that I'm a respectful person and don't mean to hurt anyone. I wish the best for everyone and hope to see you at the games and graduation."

Oklahoma State has not announced any disciplinary action for Pilgrim, though there's a good chance he'll be punished considering in-state rival Oklahoma suspended receiver Jaz Reynolds for similar comments after a Texas student opened fire on campus.

Ultimately, Pilgrim's comments probably only require the removal of his Twitter account and a few days of suicides in practice. It was a stupid thing to say -- especially for a senior -- but he's apologized and hopefully learned from it.
