PLAYERS TO WATCH:
--- Mike Scott is Virginia's best player. The 6-foot-9 senior forward has started 68 games and posted 18 double doubles. Last season, he led the Cavs in rebounds averaging 7.2 per game.
--- Mustapha Farrakhan is an unlikely starter, but was thrust into the lineup because junior Sammy Zeglinski suffered a knee injury that will sideline him until mid-December. He's been average handling the ball and averages 2.3 turnovers per game and he's lacking as a player maker. He averages 1.7 assists. Farrakhan is the grandson of Nation of Islam leader Louis Farrakhan.
--- Billy Baron doesn't start, but the freshman guard has received starter's minutes in first three games. He's averaging 23.0 minutes, which is fourth on the team. Baron is also averaging 11.7 points, which is second among the Cavs. He's converted more three-pointers (seven) than any other player.
OVERVIEW:
--- Bennett lost nine lettermen from last season, which forced him to sign a six-player freshman class. He uses five freshmen in a 10-player rotation.
--- The Cavaliers aren't very tall and they deploy a three-guard lineup.
--- Judging from the Stanford game, the Cavaliers like to penetrate with their guards and kick it out to shooters on the outside. They're also get shooters open on screens, which is a trademark of a Bennett team.
--- Defensively, Virginia plays a sticky man-to-man defense, however, it allowed 13 three-pointers to Stanford and lost the rebounding edge 29-24.
STARTING LINEUP:
F - Mike Scott, 6-8, 242, Sr., 15.0 ppg., 9.0 rpg.
C - Assane Sene, 7-0, 239, Jr., 1.3, 1.3
G - Mustapha Farrakhan, 6-4, 181, Sr., 11.7, 2.0
G - Jontel Evans, 5-11, 190, So., 9.0, 4.3 apg.
G - Joe Harris, 6-6, 202, Fr., 7.3, 2.3
KEY MATCHUP:
Justin Holiday could start on Scott, but the Virginia forward outweighs him by 60 pounds, so 225-pound Darnell Gant is more suitable. However, it's vital for Washington to hammer away at Virginia's small lineup with forward Matthew Bryan-Amaning. He'll face his tallest challenge in Sene who plays limited minutes and hasn't had much of statistical presence so far this season. Scott will also likely be assigned defensively to Bryan-Amaning and he's a very physical defender.
Correction: An early version of this post said Louis Farrakhan was the leader of the Black Panthers. He is not.
