• The best sign from Georgetown's 82-67 victory over NC State in the title game of the Charleston Classic was that the Hoyas received contributions from more than just guards Austin Freeman, Chris Wright and Jason Clark. Big men Julian Vaughn, Hollis Thompson and Henry Sims followed up an encouraging performance against Wofford in the semifinal by taking advantage of the absence of NC State's Tracy Smith in the title game.
• Colorado's hopes of earning a surprise NCAA tournament berth took a hit on Saturday when the Buffs became the second team this season to lose a game by calling a Chris Webber-esque timeout they didn't have. This time it was Cory Higgins with the blunder, enabling San Francisco to sink two technical foul shots in the final seconds and escape with an 83-81 overtime upset.
• The full story of why star Kevin Coble left the Northwestern basketball program is more bizarre than the abridged version we received a few months ago. In a nutshell, he told the Chicago Tribune that coach Bill Carmody gave him an ultimatum that he go on the Wildcat's preseason trip to Italy and his doctors said he wasn't ready so he felt he had no other choice but to quit the team.
• A sign it isn't Iowa's year: Organizers at the Paradise Jam played Iowa State's fight song when the Hawkeyes took the floor before facing Xavier on Friday. Credit the Hawkeyes for bouncing back from an 86-73 loss to the Musketeers by notching their best win of the season the next day with a consolation-round victory over Alabama
• In retrospect, maybe Jim Boeheim calling his Syracuse team the most overrated he's ever coached wasn't hyperbole. The Orange struggled with a weaker team for the fourth time in four games, this time trailing William & Mary into the final two minutes before rallying for a 63-60 home victory despite shooting 36.7 percent from the field and 5 of 22 from three-point range.
• One team that's deserving of more publicity than it has received early this season is Rider, which thumped Loyola Marymount on Sunday after already defeating USC and TCU the previous two days. The only loss Rider has sustained so far this year is to UMass in a game the Broncos led by 20-plus points at halftime.
• The only good thing for Oregon State about a dreadful 66-60 loss to previously winless Texas Southern on Sunday is that it probably means the Beavers won't be donning turquoise uniforms again anytime soon. Between this upset and a previous loss to Seattle, Oregon State doesn't seem to be making much progress in coach Craig Robinson's third season.
• If Saturday's 57-52 loss to Xavier was a sample of what Seton Hall's offense will look like without Jeremy Hazell (wrist) for the next four to six weeks, then the Pirates could really struggle. They shot 37 percent from the field and struggled to replace his 20-plus points per game in falling to Xavier in the semifinals of the Paradise Jam Tournament.
• Monday's Gonzaga-Kansas State CBE Classic semifinal in Kansas City just got a little more intriguing. FoxSports.com's Jeff Goodman reports that Gonzaga's Elias Harris will play despite the ankle injury he suffered against San Diego State last week and that Curtis Kelly has emerged from Frank Martin's doghouse and will be in Kansas State's starting lineup.
