Korie Lucious suspended for season-opener

Lucious avoids the vicious.

Michigan State coach Tom Izzo took it easy on his junior guard, relatively speaking, as he opted to sit Korie Lucious for two games, only one of which matters, anyway.

Lucious, who was arrested in the early hours on Aug. 30 for getting behind the wheel after a night of drinking, will miss tonight’s exhibition game against Saginaw Valley State and the Nov. 12 season-opener, at home, against Eastern Michigan.

Is the punishment enough to satisfy most? Perhaps. Remember, Lucious’ charges were reduced after he plead guilty to the charge.

Izzo alluded to the Lucious’ punishment when I spoke with him three weeks ago. His primary view of the entire situation: Lucious has earned his way back on to the team after going through many a community service act. (I think there’s a few things he’s done that haven’t been disclosed to the public, too.) A multi-game suspension was always in the future, though you could argue this isn’t a true multi-game suspension, as tonight's game doesn't count in the team's standings.

Lucious turns 21 Friday. You have to wonder how that birthday party will go. The MSU guard is due back in court for his hearing Dec. 20.
