Washington coach Lorenzo Romar said he expects to receive four scholarship papers tomorrow. Initially I was thrown off by that number, anticipating the Huskies would sign the three recruits - Tony Wroten Jr., Hikeem Stewart and Jernard Jarreau - who verbally committed to UW.
It's a bit of a mystery who is the fourth recruit.
The likely candidates are Portland point guard Andrew Andrews and Kevin Davis, a 6-8 forward who played at Todd Beamer High in Federal Way. Both reportedly verbally committed to UW.
Davis is enrolled at Tacoma Community College and will play this season while shoring up his academics.
Andrews, a 6-foot-2, 175-pound guard, is a senior at Benson Tech in Portland. Reportedly, he's going to attend a prep school in Arizona and was planning to enroll at Washington in 2012.
Romar met with the media today for his weekly press conference and most of talk was about UW's ability to rebound. He said it's unlikely any one player will dominate the rebounding this season like Jon Brockman and expects a collaborative effort.
Romar was unsure if the last week's starting lineup would start Saturday in the opener against McNeese State.
"I think so, but not totally sure," he said.
Romar said forward Darnell Gant could replace Scott Suggs if he's healthy. Gant hasn't played in about two weeks after injuring his groin. Even though Gant averages 2.9 rebounds per game, Romar said the 6-foot-8 forward gives UW a bigger body to help defend and box out.
When asked about the rotation, Romar was vague about how many players would play.
Venoy Overton said he's about 80 percent recovered from a left hamstring injury. He fully expects to play, but is curious how his leg will respond this week in practice.
Overton looks as if he's going to come off the bench, which leaves Abdul Gaddy in the starting lineup along with Isaiah Thomas, Justin Holiday and Matthew Bryan-Amaning.
Bryan-Amaning said he understands most of the rebounding responsibilities falls on his shoulders. Still, he acknowledged that if UW continues to shoot 17 three-pointers, then it's difficult for the post players to grab those rebounds and it's incumbent the guards get those missed shots.
Freshman Desmond Simmons missed practice Monday because he needed to have fluid drained from his surgically-repaired knee. Romar said there's been no decision about Simmons redshirting this season.
Overton and Simmons returned to practice today. Gant worked individually on the side.
