Norvell Pelle commits to St. John's; Kanter ruled ineligible

Washington coach Lorenzo Romar lost prized Los Angeles forward Norvel Pelle to his friend and former colleague Steve Lavin, the new head coach at St. John's.

Pelle, a 6-8, 200-pounder, was reportedly going to make an official visit to UW this weekend and attend the opener against McNeese State on Saturday, however, he announced his college choice today on national TV.

Kansas, Oregon and UCLA were also in consideration.

The Huskies now turn their sights to San Diego center Angelo Chol, who is scheduled to visit UW in the spring. The 6-foot-8, 210-pound center lists Arizona, Alabama, North Carlina and Kansas among his finalists.

THURSDAY AFTERNOON LINKS:

--- In hindsight, it's a good thing Turkish star Enes Kanter broke a verbal commitment with Washington and signed with Kentucky, His amateur status was always a concern because he played professionally in Europe and today the NCAA ruled Kanter is permanently ineligible. Kentucky plans to appeal.

--- He's back. ESPN's Joe Lunardi predicts UW will be a No. 5 seed in the West and face either Texas A&M or Northwestern.

--- Washington begins the season No. 20 in the RPI. RealTimeRPI.com ranks UW's strength of schedule at No. 34.
